Sustainability at Schoppe Instant Beverages

Ecology, economy and social issues – these are the three pillars of sustainability. Sustainable sourcing, social standards and fair-trade raw ingredients are integral components of our product range at Schoppe Instant Beverages. For instance, we custom develop products for our customers with organic, Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance certification (formerly UTZ) and advise our customers on the advantages and disadvantages of the different sustainability standards. We have an extensive network of suppliers and business partners, which enables us to supply instant beverages to our customers with the raw materials and food seals they require.

Sustainability report clarifies our business principles

Since 2015, the Uelzena Group, of which Schoppe Instant Beverages is also part, has published an annual sustainability report looking back on the previous business year. In addition to the reporting principles, the Group’s latest report consists of the same five action fields as previous editions:

  • Economic performance of the company
  • Production of sustainable products
  • Investment in reduced-emission manufacturing
  • Advancement of its employees
  • Increase in regional responsibility

These action fields incorporate figures and information from the four production sites in Uelzen, Bismark, Ratzeburg and Warmsen. Schoppe Instant Beverages, with its production sites in Uelzen and Ratzeburg, is a key part of the Uelzena Group and makes a major contribution to attaining our sustainability goals.

More products with reduced resource consumption and lower environmental pollution

The core sustainability topics in production are energy and water consumption, dust and greenhouse gas development, and waste and wastewater management. Our target is to continuously reduce emissions and the consumption of resources per tonne of product produced, while also increasing productivity. Our renovation measures mean we are on the right path. For example, dust pollution has been significantly reduced. The exhaust air value of 10 mg dust/Nm3 recorded at the Tower 5 exhaust air filter, is significantly below the current maximum limit of 20 mg/Nm3 set by the German Federal government.

Sustainable sourcing of our raw ingredients

The main raw ingredients used by the Uelzena Group are milk and cream, most of which are produced within a radius of 150 kilometres from our sites. Schoppe Instant Beverages also sources non-local raw ingredients for their instant beverages, such as cocoa and instant coffee, from so-called risk countries. Our aim is to commit suppliers and manufacturers in those countries to a common standard that applies to the entire supply chain.

In the past year, about 60 percent of suppliers from these regions fulfilled the requirements of the Ethical Trade Initiative (ETI) and were also audited for further standards such as SEDEX, BSCI, TSF, SA800 or Fairtrade. However, there is limited scope for further improvement as several of our customers maintain solid partnerships with suppliers, in turn making these binding for us.

Certificates and quality seals for your instant beverages

For many years, Schoppe Instant Beverages has offered a wide variety of food quality seals. We would be very happy to advise you on selecting the right quality seal and on producing products of the desired grade for you. You can choose from the following quality seals:

  • The EU organic seal guarantees that at least 95 % of the raw ingredients in the instant beverage come from organic farming. No synthetic pesticides or readily soluble mineral fertilisers are used either.

  • The Rainforest Alliance seal (previously the UTZ seal) is primarily relevant to our beverage powders that contain coffee, cocoa and tea, which include raw ingredients from subtropical and tropical countries. It declares a commitment to sustainable farming and ensures safe and fair working conditions in the countries of origin.

  • The Fairtrade seal requires economic, social and ecological criteria are met, primarily by specifying conditions for farming, ensuring minimum prices are paid and social projects are supported.

  • The Uelzena Group is also a member of SEDEX, a data platform where companies share information on the results of SMETA audits. SMETA is an ethics-based audit format that provides information on the four areas defined by SEDEX: Work, health and safety, environment and business ethics. The Uelzena Group has also been audited for a number of years and can therefore present its customers a SMETA 4 certificate confirming compliance with ethical, labour, and environmental standards.

There is a duty of documentation for all labels in order to provide greater transparency in the value-added chain and higher production standards.

Future-oriented packaging solutions at Schoppe

Our customers’ awareness when it comes to packaging has increased in recent years, so we have been focusing on aspects such as eco-friendliness and recyclability – even more diligently with the introduction of the new German packaging law (VerpackG). This packaging law, in force across Europe since January 2019, is intended to ensure that packaging is disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. Since then, companies that bring filled packaging into circulation have been obliged to take this packaging back for recycling. Schoppe therefore keeps itself up to date to advise and support its customers as a competent partner.

To promote new, future-oriented solutions, we are exploring diverse options together with our long-standing packaging manufacturers for composite foils and tins, as well as corrugated boards from biodegradable materials or materials from renewable sources.

Our aim is to create more eco-friendly packaging based on an approach to avoid, reduce, and improve. For instance, we use some packaging materials that facilitates high-quality recycling as part of the aspired materials cycle. In the long term, the company aims to continuously improve its packaging. Schoppe’s first success was in composite foils. We have succeeded in working with an aluminium-free composite foil that still offers the product full protection.
