Café au lait is a popular choice in coffee shops or at the breakfast table: In most – mainly European – countries, it is the beverage of choice to start the day. In Germany, we enjoy our café au lait (Milchkaffee – ‘milk coffee’) a little stronger than in other countries. Compared to the French version, which is equal parts coffee and hot milk, ours contains more coffee and just a quarter milk. Incidentally, unlike the Spanish café con leche and the Italian caffè latte, café au lait is not made with espresso but with standard filter coffee.
